Gro Baby Shell Set Review

Gro Baby Shell Set

After months and months of research I decided to go with Gro Baby for my second child who would be my first in cloth diapers.

Pros:
-One size.I love that they will grow with her.I started using them on my 8lb 11oz daughter the moment she came home from the hospital. They fit and did not leak but they were definitely bulky while she was that small. Not the case anymore since she is 4 months old.I got the tip to try prefolds underneath the shell while she is a newborn and that works well too, although the prefolds are not as absorbent as the soakers that come in the shells.
-Reusable shell.I think its great the shell is reusable, because in the end it saves me money.I own about 12 shells and 19 soakers and do the wash every Monday, Wednesday, Friday. With this routine I hope the shells will last me through potty training and after four months of use I see no reason why the won't.-No leaks. With a newborn and her breastfed poop she does get poop on the shell sometimes but we have had only one or two leaks.I used disposables on vacation a couple of weeks ago and had 4 leaks in just 2 weeks.Since I have had half that many leaks in 4 months I know I made the right choice.
-Organic fibers.I prefer things to be natural fabrics/fibers and even more so when they are against my baby's bum.The fact that these soakers are organic is an even bigger plus.
-Easy to launder.I have no stains after 4 months.I have a pretty cheap washer and dryer so I am pretty limited in what I can do laundering wise but my routine is as follows.I do a cold rinse (no detergent), then I do a warm wash (1.5 scoops of tiny bubbles), then I take all the stained soakers and all the shells and hang them in the sun for about an hour or two, then I leave the shells on the line and throw all the soakers in the dryer with a towel and set it for 80 minutes.Like I said I earlier I do this 3 times a week, I was hesitant about using cloth diapers because I thought all the laundry would be a burden but its not.Its easy and I actually enjoy doing it unlike the rest of the laundry I am responsible for.
-No scratch Aplix(velcro). The aplix is not scratchy like regular velcro so if it rubs on the baby's tummy (which it hasn't yet) it won't be uncomfortable.
-Colors.The colors are bold and beautiful.Kiwi is my favorite.I have kiwi, blackberry and vanilla. The mandarin looks great online but I don't think it would be great with our skin tone so I skipped that color.

Cons
-Laundry tabs. Now this review is written in Nov '09 and i know they are working on a laundry tab solution but with the product I have right now the laundry tabs stopped working after a couple months of washing (and I never throw them in the dryer).I wrote the company and got a response back from the CEO with some tricks on how to prevent diaper chains.A few of them didn't work for me but this one did:Put the aplix on the front as if putting the diaper on the baby then turn the diaper inside out.Since I have started doing this I have no more diaper chains, woohoo! Also if you hate aplix they have a snap conversion to turn all your hook and loop dipes into snaps.
-Soakers can take a while to dry.I always throw a dry towel in the dryer with them and that works well.Every so often though I need to run a second cycle to get them fully dry.

No comment on using them overnight since I have never tried.I used my left over disposables when she was a newborn and I bought some pocket diapers during a seconds sale that I use now.The pocket diapers were just too bulky to use during the day but work great for night.

All in all I am so glad I decided to go cloth and Gro Baby.I highly recommend them.

Gerber Diaper Service Cloth Diapers (6-pk.) Review

Gerber Diaper Service Cloth Diapers

These are absorbant diapers and they hold up to the regular abuse of washing over and over again. They need to be washed several times before they are soft.I do need to mention that if you choose to cloth diaper your baby, you might want to just use velcro covers first since the weave is very tight on this diaper.I used pins, at first, and got frustrated, because they wouldn't go through the diaper. After a few washings, the weave loosened a bit and I was able to pin them more easily.

Chinese Unbleached Prefold Diaper: Medium (15-30 lbs) Review

Chinese Unbleached Prefold Diaper: Medium

During the past year I've tried all sorts of cloth diapers. These aren't fancy or cute, and they're bulky, but they absorb a lot of pee and poo. And, the more you wash them the better they get.My only complaint is that since they are so bulky, you have to size up on the pants. But, that's not really the diaper's fault so I still give these five stars.

3-Pack Boy Kissaluvs Fitted Cloth Diaper: Size 0 (5-16 lbs) Review

3-Pack Boy Kissaluvs Fitted Cloth Diaper: Size 0
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have the unbleached size 2's for my little boy, and both my husband and I love them. Most of the time we don't even use a cover because our little guy runs around in just a diaper (and shirt), and we change him when he pees.During hot weather we put him to bed in a kissaluv with a Stacinator So Simple wool cover, and he doesn't get all funky sweaty as he nurses to sleep. But then we use Bumgenius 2.0 with a diaper doubler for the rest of the nighttime diapers.Works AWESOME.

So if you are new to cloth diapering, I know it can be very overwhelming to choose what kind of "system" you will be most comfortable with.Well, Kissaluv fitted diapers are probably *the* best diaper for newborn thru potty training...which is why of allll the diapers out there, these finally made it to Amazon.I really like the snaps, so no scratching from velcro. And you *really* do get a custom fit with the snaps, something I was totally skeptical of.The elastic is very gentle, yet holds well.I wish we had these during the newborn explosive poo stage.I would recommend the Bummis Super Snap cover if you don't want to use wool.Bummis covers can be washed and dried with your diapers. And once again, no velcro (unless you get the Bummis Super Whisper Wrap, which as the name implies does NOT whisper when unhooking the velcro).Snaps are super handy when is comes to washing, because with velcro you have to fasten all the tabs before laundering...not a huge deal, but still just one more thing.

Washing is REALLY easy.Way easier than driving to Target to buy disposables =) If your baby is exclusively breastfed (so, at least 6 months and younger) then you do *not* need to dispose of the poo in the toilet first (when your baby is older, a diaper sprayer works well for this).Breastmilk poo is water soluble! To wash your diapers, set the water to cold and do a pre-rinse at the highest water level (for a full load). Then set to hot/cold and add 3 tablespoons powder Tide, with an extra rinse. All done.I dry my diapers on medium...or if its really hot out I line dry them. But be warned, they can take all day to dry outside. You can fluff them in the dryer if line drying makes them stiff.

How many will you need? For newborn, I'd say 50-60.Yeah, sounds like a lot...but you will be changing diapers 20-25 times per day, and this way you can do laundery every other day.Really expensive you say? You'll spend this much on disposables...and at least your baby will be way more comfortable not wearing plastic.Besides, you can sell them on eBay to make some $$ back, or use 'em for the next kid.The Size 0 lasts quite awhile, so you will definitely get your money's worth. You will need at least 6-8 covers. You don't need to wash covers every time, unless they get poo on them.Just let them dry and rotate use. This is why I like wool, for its antimicrobial properties.

I really hope this helps you make the choice to use cloth diapers.Cloth diapering is a huge investment, but it really pays off.Our diapers are probably the biggest-ticket items we bought for baby (we bought a lot of bumgenius 2.0 as well), but we didn't spend money on other things such as a crib, nursery decor, or formula.

Kushies - Reusable Ultra-lite Diapers 5 Pack Review

Kushies - Reusable Ultra-lite Diapers 5 Pack

The designs on these are ADORABLE and I was so psyched when they arrived. They were just as absorbant and performed just as well as the original Kushies ULTRA AIO's I've been using for the past 3 years.HOWEVER, AFTER A COUPLE DAYS OF USE I NOTICED A BAD RASH AND IRRITATION ON MY SONS STOMACH FROM THE VELCRO.SINCE THE COVER IS NOT A THICK VINYL LIKE THE ULTRAS, BUT MORE OF A SILKY MATERIAL I THINK THEY PULLED DOWN IN FRONT WHEN HE WET AND THE VELCRO WOULD START RUBBING AGAINST HIS SKIN.I returned them and contacted Kushies, who have awesome customer service, but swore they haven't encountered this prob with anyone else. So, who knows???I purchased more of the original Ultra's and have no problem.Afterall, these Ultra-lite's are no "lighter" or less bulky then the Ultra's-they just have a diferent kind of outer layer/cover.So, if the designs don't bother you, I would recommend the Kushies Ultra's, not the Ultra-lites!

Real Nappies Cloth Diapers Birth To Potty Pack, Newborn to Toddler, for babies 6-40+ lb Review

Real Nappies Cloth Diapers Birth To Potty Pack, Newborn to Toddler, for babies 6-40+ lb
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I knew that I wanted to try to use cloth diapers with my baby. I was doing all my cloth diapering research when my water broke 5 weeks early! So right before heading to the hospital I ordered the birth to potty pack because this system had the best reviews. The diapers arrived soon after we came home from the hospital. Since I was in a rush to use them, I only did two hot water cycles before putting them into circulation. Even with just two hot washes, the diapers were absorbent and had quilted up nicely. I hated the idea of wasting so much hot water for just 1 stage of diaper inserts, so I washed the Newborn and Infant stages together. Good thing too, because my full-sized preemie outgrew the newborn size in about a month. I went to pack away the newborn diapers, when I realized I can use the smaller diapers as a "catch pad"/bib for breastfeeding. I'm currently on the Infant size and I'm using the Crawlers and Toddler sizes as tummy-time drool mats, drool mats for naptime, lap pads, and as changing pad liners. The use as changing pad liner was an epiphany after reading so many bad reviews for changing pad systems that required special liners that ultimately end up rolling and bunching in the wash. I received some name-brand washable lap pads as a gift, and they were really small and only lasted two washes before falling apart because they're just two pieces of felt glued together; what a waste! These Real Nappies have turned into so much more than just diapers, and this set really is everything you need to diaper your baby!

Every 2 days I use Charlie's Soap and the tiniest amount of the Nappy Fresh to wash soiled diapers on a cold water+extra rinse cycle, and then I add all of baby's clothes and other laundry for a second warm water+extra rinse cycle. Haven't had any staining or odor issues yet. I only wash the diaper covers if they get pooped on, and air dry the other covers by building and rotating thru all 6 covers in a day.

My baby hates wet diapers, and will cry the instant his is wet. When you feel the diaper, there's never any question if it's wet, versus with disposables we're always poking the diaper over and over again to figure out if that's the reason baby's crying. People have told me the cloth diapers will make potty training easier because baby will know when the diaper is wet, versus with super absorbent diapers, babies tend to sit around in them for longer periods of time. When my baby was sick and having diarrhea, we went 48 hours in disposables, and in that short amount of time he got diaper rash. When we switched back to the nappies, the rash went away. We've never had to use diaper cream (why add more chemicals to your baby's life?).

These cloth diapers have far better workmanship than other prefolds out there. I wanted a few extra inserts so I bought some prefolds and covers from other companies for comparison. I found that the Real Nappies are a little narrower in the crotch so baby's legs can be closer together (how is baby supposed to crawl with a huge diaper in the way?) so I joke that they are European cut. The sewing is tidier and doesn't unravel. For the diaper covers, I love that the fabric is soft and there's no exposed PUL (other companies have an exposed polyurethane liner, almost like pizza parlor tablecloth, and it tends to get sweatier). We've had some close calls, but have not yet had any blow outs (#1 nor #2) even though there are no gussets. The edges of the velcro can be sharp, but aren't nearly as sharp as other wraps I've tried. Keeping the diaper insert pulled all the way to the top edge will help keep the diaper cover from rolling inward and cutting into baby's belly.

The one thing I didn't figure out until later: Since you're doing cloth diapers, why not do cloth wipes too! They can fit into a diaper warmer or tupperware. Just add water and a few drops of natural wipes solution!

I'm a first time mom and I'm no crunchy-granola-hippie, I'm really more of a consumer. But I wanted to provide my baby with the healthiest options I could afford. I never planned to "go green" but after trying these diapers, I can see how easy it is to make my household healthier by reducing the amount of chemicals and trying to choose greener products. While the initial investment is upfront, in the long run, I will spend less on diapering my baby.

I love these diapers.

I haven't used any other kinds of diapers, but these have worked great for us.They wash well- no stains to date!- remain soft, fit well into Bummi Whisper Wraps, and absorb a lot. We've never had a blowout with poop in six months while using these diapers and Bummis. They have stayed a lot softer than the store-bought pre-folds I got.
